Tire Labeling And Material Selection: Key Considerations For Safety And Performance

Jun 26, 2025

As the only part of a vehicle that contacts the road, the performance of the tire directly impacts driving safety, fuel efficiency, and service life. Tire labeling and material selection are two key factors in evaluating tire quality.

The EU's mandatory tire labeling regulations, implemented since 2012, use three indicators: rolling resistance, wet grip, and external rolling noise, to provide consumers with an intuitive basis for purchasing. Rolling resistance grades (A to G) directly impact fuel economy, with high-grade tires reducing fuel consumption by 3%-5%. Wet grip (A to F) affects braking distance in rainy weather, with poorly rated tires potentially extending braking distance by several meters. Noise levels (decibels) reflect environmental performance. my country has implemented a similar labeling system since 2020 to promote industry transparency.

Material selection is the foundation of tire performance. The rubber formula determines its fundamental properties: natural rubber provides elasticity and wear resistance, synthetic rubber (such as styrene-butadiene rubber) enhances wet grip, and carbon black and silica fillers balance wear resistance and rolling resistance. The carcass cord material affects structural strength. Traditional steel cord is suitable for heavy-duty tires, while aramid or high-modulus polyester fibers are used for lightweight designs. In recent years, the use of bio-based rubber and nanocomposites has further improved environmental performance and functionality.

When purchasing, consumers should weigh the tire label rating based on their vehicle usage scenarios: For urban commuting, wet grip and low rolling resistance are prioritized, while for long-distance transport, wear resistance and load-bearing capacity are a balance. Scientifically matching tire material with label information is a key strategy for ensuring driving safety and economy.
