Detailed NFC Tag Operation Guide

Jun 25, 2025

Near-field communication (NFC) technology, with its convenient short-range data transmission capabilities, is widely used in scenarios such as mobile payments, access control, and information exchange. NFC tags, as data carriers, have a direct impact on the user experience. This article systematically explains the common NFC tag operation procedures and precautions.

1. Preparing to Write Data

Before using an NFC tag, confirm that your device supports NFC (usually found in the "Connect & Share" option in your phone's settings). Place the NFC tag to be written to the sensor area on the back of your phone. Some models require manually enabling "NFC Writing Mode." Major operating systems (such as Android's "NFC Tools" or iOS's "Shortcuts") offer tag editing. Users can select the storage type (e.g., text, URL, app launch command, etc.) and enter the target information through the app.

2. Data Writing and Formatting

After selecting the data type on the writing interface, enter the specific content (e.g., URLs must begin with "http://"). Advanced users can configure trigger conditions, such as "touch to open a specific app" or "respond only when the screen is locked." After writing is complete, it's recommended to touch the tag again with your phone's NFC sensor to verify data integrity. Some industrial-grade tags support encrypted writing, which requires access permissions set using specialized tools.

III. Daily Use and Maintenance

To use, gently touch the back of your phone to the tag surface (usually less than 4 cm). The device will automatically interpret the tag's instructions. If the operation fails, it may be due to tag damage, battery interference, or incorrect data format. Try cleaning the tag surface with a soft cloth or rewriting the data. During long-term storage, avoid high temperatures and strong magnetic fields to extend the chip's life.

Mastering the basic operations of NFC tags will not only improve daily efficiency but also provide reliable technical support for IoT applications.
